The Plight of the Maharashtrians

The Plight of the MaharashtriansThe other day while I was getting some photocopies done at a shop, I got into conversation with the shopkeeper, a retired old man from Pune. It started with weather and I told him that I liked Pune for its moderate weather as compared to Delhi with its extreme temperatures. He said, “You are from the north?” and I said, “Oops, I shouldn’t have mentioned especially with so much hate propaganda going on against the north Indians in Maharashtra.” He smiled and told me that Marathis have had it coming for them for quite sometime now. They don’t want to earn a hard day’s living. They want easy money; they close down their shops at 2:00 PM and open at 4:00 PM (it had struck odd to me too when I first came to Pune; 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM being peak shopping hours); they just want to lease out their property and live off the monthly rents and are perfectly content with it; local labourers asking for more money for putting in less hours of work.

He pointed out, on the other hand, labourers from north India are much more hard working and much cheaper than local ones. He sneered and said, “Now what are these factory owners going to do, what with local labourers asking three times more money without the guarantee of returning to work the next day?” While he was talking I remembered a similar conversation I had with one of my friends from Mumbai few years ago. She was expressing the same sentiment about Maharashtrians. She said in Maharashtra one can find Maharashtrians working in government offices like post offices; banks; municipal corporations etc., and they are happy working in such secure jobs, while people from other states have come and grabbed best opportunities and accrued wealth for themselves.

Considering the sentiments of the common man here, the problem is not imagined but a real one and the solution lies not in hate propaganda and violence; the politicians are using this issue as a political gimmick to serve their own ends. It is a social problem that needs to be dealt with care and sensitivity, and measures should be taken that appease the Maharashtrians and at the same time not alienate ones coming from outside Maharashtra.

Norren, you have failed to address an important issue in your article. Failure of the political class of some northern States to provide good governance.

By perpetuating backwardness, States such as Bihar and UP have cornered the lion’s share of Central funds. Instead of pretending to be victims of discrimination, the rulers in these States should address the burning issues. True, everyone has the right to live or work anywhere in India. But large-scale migration of people from other States into a city is likely to provoke resentment among the locals

I don`t want Mumbai to be the playground of Biharis and UP bhaiyas. I support Raj Thackeray full-heartedly.

yes this is where the difference is? but irony is they still blame north indians to take their jobs away , pity for the abomination that they have and likes of Raj Thakerey deserve applause for their hypocrisy or ignorance - what should I call his idiosyncratic behavior, I know not but this is catastrophic thinking and could do...

The last time I went to Pune was around this time in 2003. I too was stuck by the complete shutdown of Marathi-owned shops during lunch time. In fact, I had to ask a few people if there was some kind of an incident.

The best possible way to teach the Thackerays a lesson would be that all north Indians withdraw their investments from the state to develop their own so that the migrant labourers who work so hard can work safely in their own states.

Also, north Indian should boycott watching movies of those Bollywood artists who have voiced their support to the madman Bal Thackeray’s cause.

For centuries, India was ruled by outsiders, but we have not yet learnt the lesson to remain united. We are just a bunch of fighting kids on whom the whole world is laughing!

Grow up Raj Thackeray!!

What I think after watching the whole anti-north Indian and anti-Bihari politics played by Thackeray family that it is battle to grab Maratha votes permanently. I wonder no one says anything against Biharis or north Indians except two kid Thackeray and one Old Thackeray. The family, whi ch has been divided on the question of legacy, is now dividing the country with their unacceptable ideas. Marathi manus cannot survive without going out of Mumbai and Maharshtra. They are back-stabber.

See how Thackerays are losing shine - initially they were against south Indians, then against Muslims, then went against minorities, also went against Pakistani cricket team by digging Kotla gorund to stop the India-Pakistan cricket match, and when party like NCP started wooing maratha voter under the leadership of Sharad Pawar, the Thackerays started using Marathi emotions by attacking north Indians, particularly Biharis. Bala saheb criticised Kalam and Vajpayee also. Someday, they will start opposing India's federal structure and ask for separate nationhood for Maharashtra to become PM of Marathistan. Thackerays should get severe punishment for using deregotary remarks against people of India living in north India.

Senior Thackeray is cartoonist so he nourished well his two children Raj Thackeray and Udhav Thackeray to become good cartoon characters. Raj is big one than Udhav because he has less brain than his sibling. Rajwa ke galwa par char chanta subahwa me aur char chanta sam ke mare ke chanhi tab okar dimag thik hoyi.

Who are Thackeray duo to decide who should stay in Mumbai and who shouldn't? Bihar CM Nitish Kumar should take strong step and Maharashtra CM to book them for anti-national activities.

You are right. It would be the most effective step, what I can say ’Tit for Tat’ for so-called Thackerays, who vandalized the very concept of nationhood .

What Bal Thackeray has written in 'samna' is his last and weak effort to save Maratha support in Shiv Sena because Raj Thackeray is cleverly overtaking Uddhav in the race. Poor Thackeray..he is too old to help his son to save from his own nephew. What a family fight...

Bihari leaders are shameless people. They are not coming out strongly because they know better that what Bal Thackeray has written in samna is 100% correct. they have looted Bihar and forced Biharis to go out of the state to earn livings for their family members. Poor Bihari people, they have no father like Thackeray to defend them outside Bihar. Lalu is big joker. He said that he will send more Biharis to Mumbai.. Is this a way to protect your own people, he is big stupid and Nitish Kumar is gutless leader who prefers writing letter to PM every time when Thackerays open their mouth to venom.

@ author what do you want to say here? Are Marathi not hardworking people? If they choose not work between 2PM to 4 PM they are lethargic people? stop abusing them like this. The thing is that Maharashtra needs everyone but not in large numbers. the problem with Bihari people is that they can't live in peace and crime and politics are in their blood. They can't live without playing politics even in their locality or in their offices or without hurting people physically. What was wrong if Bala Saheb told them to stay in their state. A suggestion to Biharis - Go and ask your leaders to answer why you are facing such conditions everywhere in India be it Assam, Delhi, Mumbai and Tamilnadu. Otherwise you people would always live life like hell in countless numbers of Jhuggis in metros.

Its strange that no political leaders except some from Bihar are saying anything against Thackerays, I am dead sure if Thackeray would have said against Muslims, no political leader including superwoman Sonia Gandhi could afford to stay silent. After all Muslims are bigger vote bank than Biharis. This is all Indian politics. Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh should be held responsible for what happened in Mumbai and Maharshtra against north Indians.

Raj Thackeray’s idiotic tirade over the northerners called for a rift and anguish in the southern state...the following exodus of the immigrants affected industry operations in the state on a massive parameter. Either way - affected, the state of Maharashtra, and tyrants like Raj live another day for causing a similar ruckus. ’Too many cooks spoil the broth’ has become the irony of our good old county, India. It’s difficult to differentiate Politics from Politicians and vise versa.

Live in harmony and unity, you souls of my land, coz these men have only their own means and meanings to confirm. They have nothing for you and they give me none, shun them, for then they will have nothing but northerners and southerners to confer upon.

Saad, stop talking like this, One Musharraf in Islamabad is enough than 28 Thackres to divide the country. Just think what would happen to your country in case of 7 Musharrafs. Indian leaders are strong enough to keep such elements silent, they have history of doing it.

Noreen frankly I have failed to understand what point you have made here...I agree with ur statement that ”the problem is not imagined but a real one and the solution lies not in hate propaganda and violence; the politicians are using this issue as a political gimmick to serve their own ends.”....

But then we simply can’t blame anyone for being more hard working or being competitive, can we? U’ve mentioned that Maharashtrians are happy with their secured jobs but the next point you put is that ”people from other parts have grabbed best opportunities and accrued wealth for themselves” even here i fail to understand that who can be blamed for this or why have u even mentioned this...I am sure many Maharashtrians are big industrialists, heroes with immense fame, politicians of power etc etc...

@ YASH...
I am sure we don’t need to find another Thackeray when people like u exist! How can u say that ”. the problem with Bihari people is that they can’t live in peace and crime and politics are in their blood”, don’t tell me that ur one of the saintly people who haven’t even killed an ant...

And I am sorry to say, if actually every one belogig to other state(s) comes back to his/her native place, not only Maharashtrian Govt will be at loss, but the very heart of India would become a desolate desert!!!

I wonder how a sate within a nation can crave such a foolish demand or exceed the sovereignty of nation...how can they forgot they're the nationals of that nation before they belong to a particular region. Such demands can't be and shouldn't be adhered to.

No No Yash You are wrong, Vilasrao is not bloody shiv sainik but a sycophant of Sharad Pawar and dancing on the tune played by Pawar and his men sitting in government. Actually it is conspiracy of Congress-NCP nexus to use Raj Thackeray against Bal Thackeray's popularity among marathis people. This is one of the best example of political appeasement in modern India.

Indians deserve exactly what north Indians getting in Mumbai. Indians, who arrive in Australia, have made our life hell. Now, we will start using the same trick what Mr. Raj Thackray is applying against poor north Indians living in Mumbai. Indians here don't respect our culture and they are very rude. We will start beating them black and blue now.

A suggestion to Eliot - find Marathis in Australia and start slapping them just like Raj Thackeray threatened to slap Biharis on roads in Mumbai. And we will search Australians here in India to beat and punch them. Wow! what an idea!! Bal Thackeray and Raj Thackeray deserve noble prize for evolving such brilliant idea in today's global world. I am going to to search any Marathi in my city now and I swear I will beat them without any cause. Its fun really..

OK What a great debate is going on here. I think Raj Thackeray has achieved for what he played all the political and regional stunts in last one month. The whole media is giving him so much space and people are either praising him or criticizing him. This is a danger sign for ‘Marathi manus ke Bhagwan’ Bal Thackeray. That’s why he also jumped in the drama despite calcium-less bones and ‘Indian-ness-less’ brain and wrote abusing remarks against people of Bihar.

After all this is nothing but struggle to survive and to survive a human being can go to any extent. Someone here called Thackeray brothers as cartoon characters nourished by Senior Thackeray and some one even abused Biharis in same tune as Raj T did. This is our weakness since centuries back. We just start fighting without thinking anything positive.

Shiv Khera says – “if someone is abusing and beating your neighbours and you are watching it silently, you are the next in queue to face the same.” So, Yash from Gwalior, this is brotherly suggestion to you dear that people of Madhya Pradesh may similar problem in Maharashtra, Mumbai, Delhi or anywhere else if you support people like Raj T and Bala T.

Just feel the happiness in the writings of Pakistanis like Zafar and Saad. Australians are also talking in same tune against Indians in their own country. This is dangerous trend and it needs immediate check. We should start creating pressure on our state leadership to condemn what Thackerays are doing in Mumbai. The social and political boycott of Thackeray morons is the simple solution of the problem.

It is our constitutional right to be able to live in any part of the country we wish to and practice any trade we wish to. It is as simple as that. Anyone who says otherwise is committing a crime and must be put behind bars. Now only, if only the damn governments had the guts to throw these people in the prison the first time they shout, all this would never have come up. Everyone is too interested in protecting their own vote bank.
